reach in
Let’s continue to examine and reduce our own carbon footprints.
For about $6-8per month we can purchase renewable energy options from PGE or Pacific Power and insure they are supplying our demand using, wind, solar, biomass, geothermal, or hydroelectric generation.
For Clark County residents, click here and purchase the percentage of energy you want to be fossil fuel free. (10% is $1/month while 100% is $10/month.)
Continue moving toward a plant-based diet by reducing or eliminating meats.
Move away from gas-powered car transportation toward walking, biking, and public transportation when we can. If we have to drive, moving toward greater fuel efficiency in hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles. A nonprofit, FORTH Mobility, helps people find the most efficient car to meet their needs.
Consider buying carbon offsets for the fossil fuels we burn (cars, home heating, & flying) as we transition off of them over the next decade. The average American consumer can offset their carbon for around $200 at terrapass.com. Use the carbon footprint calculator at terrapass to show a dollar amount, and optionally donate to our local friendsoftrees.org to not only offset carbon, but help build heat resilience into our community.

Let’s reach beyond ourselves by urging others to join us in changing our economic systems.
Create opportunities to talk to people you know about the climate crisis. Only 12% of people in America understand that scientists have reached consensus on “climate change is caused by our burning of fossil fuels and we have about a decade to reduce our use of them by 45%. This increases the probability that we will, over centuries, be able to back away from ever-intensifying heat, famine, sea level rise, storm violence, forced emigration, political instabilities, and human suffering. Being carbon neutral by 2050 is a necessary and reachable goal.” (IPCC 2019 Report)
Regularly contact government representatives to let them know climate change is a top voting priority. Let them know you are part of a faith community that is NOT okay with the inequality of the world’s wealthiest top 10% producing 50% of greenhouse gases while the poorest 50%, who contribute only 10% of gases, are the most impacted.
Vote in every election for officials and initiatives taking real action on climate.

Let’s reach back to give a hand to those already impacted by the violence of
climate change.
Those experiencing famine, loss of homes, and necessary economic shifts to renewable energy.
