Pastoral Review – Rod Stafford
Portland Mennonite Church / March 2023

The purpose of a pastoral review is to provide “intentional reflection and collaborative discernment” within the context and scope of a congregation’s call and vision. Taking time to reflect on our journey as a congregation enables us to affirm our leaders, develop insight, and envision our future together (adapted from MCUSA guidelines). Please answer the following questions candidly and thoughtfully. If you have any questions, contact Kate Manelis, Chair of the Staff Relations Committee.

    Question #1
Our pastor shapes the identity of the congregation as a distinctly Christian and Anabaptist community through preaching, teaching and worship.  He creates an engaging worship experience by leading the worship committee and encouraging a variety of gifts from within the congregation to be used in a multitude of ways.

    Question #2
In partnership with the Leadership Table, the pastor discerns and carries the vision that guides the congregation in its mission; being sensitive to potentially contentious issues and helping guide healthy responses by contributing to the substance of the conversations.

    Question #3
Our pastor leads the staff by providing support, direction, and supervision in coordinating their efforts to create a healthy culture in which the congregation can live out the gospel in practical and effective ways.

    Question #4
The pastor is available to provide pastoral care and facilitate congregational care (ex. officiating at life rituals, providing spiritual support during times of celebration or crisis).

    Question #5
Our pastor represents PMC to the broader church community and conference and is involved in Portland’s greater community of faith.

    Question #6
Our pastor seems authentic, responsive, and collaborative.

Because this is the end of Rod’s current term at PMC, we need to consider inviting him to continue for another three-year term.

(Signing helps us be accountable for what we say. It also enables the review committee to follow up if clarification or additional information is needed.)
