On August 11, 2014, six inches of rain fell in Detroit and surrounding communities in a short time, flooding tens of thousands of basements with storm water mixed with sewage. Residents who were unable to clean out their flooded basements are now having severe mold problems, causing respiratory problems for some persons living in these contaminated homes. Several volunteer agencies, including MDS, have cleaned out hundreds of basements since the flood. MDS continues to muck out basements as requests come in, and repair basements that are significant living spaces for families. This often involves a bit of framing work, insulation, drywall, trim and flooring. Mike plans to be working at the Detroit site until November 21. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to all the volunteers and families that came out and made PUMPKINS FOR PEACE a fun event. People of all ages had a fun time carving pumpkins, pressing cider and eating delicious soup! The money raised will benefit the work of MCC and refugees around the world.
We had a great time Sunday evening learning about homelessness in Portland and affordable housing solutions. Jes Larson of the Welcome Home Coalition presented. The Alan Jones Trio provided music. Thanks to the Justice Committee for organizing it all. More to come.
