Remembering the Celtic Evensong service

I will light a light in the name of the Maker, who lit the world and breathed the breath of life for me.
I will light a light in the name of the Son,
who saved the world and stretched out his hand for me.
I will light a light in the name of the Spirit, who encompasses the world and blesses my soul with yearning.
On March 16, Saint Patrick's Eve, we gathered for a Celtic Evensong service. We listened and sang and prayed, trusting the Trinity of Love - God above us, God beside us, God beneath us, the Beginning, the End, the Everlasting.

Join us on St. Patrick’s Eve

“Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me.”
~ Prayer attributed to St. Patrick

Join us on St. Patrick’s Eve, March 16, for a service of music and scriptures, silence and prayers. The Celtic tradition of Christian spirituality, which emerged in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, has always understood that all of life is interconnected and that God is present in the midst of it all. And so in this season of Lent (which means literally ‘Spring’), as winter thaws and we hold to the promise of new life, we will gather trusting that God is present with us, that Christ will encircle us, and that the Spirit will guide us. The service will begin at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.

Everyone is welcome.

light, grace, hope & peace...

Friends of Portland Mennonite Church,

On Christmas Eve we collected an offering at our candlelight service to assist families, primarily in Syria, who are trying to stay in their homes and in their homeland. All of the money went to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to be distributed through their international partners. We sent a check to MCC for $23,455. We sent other checks made out directly to MCC that totaled an additional $4500. I am tremendously grateful for your generosity.    ~Rod

We also received this note from Nate Yoder, Executive Director of West Coast MCC:
Dear PMC,

Thank you for your continued strong and significant support for the work of MCC! Your Christmas contribution of $23,455 for the work in Syria/Iraq is making a huge impact! The gospel of John says that when Jesus came into the world, people saw the light of God. Our partners in Syria tell us that in the midst of these times they cling to the mercy of God, and the work of MCC is one way they receive that mercy.

'Thank you for helping us continue to bring the light, grace, hope and peace of Christ to this war-ravaged part of the world. May God bless your church as you share the peace of Christ in your community and around the world.

~Nate Yoder

Meet your 2016 Village Support Team

3/3/2016

Through New City Initiative’s Village Support Network, Portland Mennonite Church has sponsored 2 families with young children as they transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing. A ‘Village Support Team’ is made up of 4-6 church members that commit to support and mentor a family that has been living in crisis.  For six months, the team helps the family pursue their own goals to help them achieve stability, satisfaction and empowerment in their new homes and communities.

This Spring, a third team has come together and is preparing to meet the family they will be supporting.  Please pray for the team and family as they embark on this journey together.
